It's a petulant one, this drop. A whisky you should really don a pair of boots before drinking, but an interesting one nonetheless.
A'bunadh (Gaelic for "the Origin"), by the Aberlour distillery, at your local stockist. You don't need it. It's not a very, VERY good whisky; it is Scottish after all. But it's a tasty dram, a sweet drop. And when I say sweet, I mean it. This one's been aged in Sherry and it's evident in the vapours of vanilla that come charging out of the glass of the cask strength hooch that's in front of you, with a similar aggressively sweet nose to that of good bourbon. It's one for the man who can handle a bit extra. After the vanilla has subsided, there are subtle shades of leather, slight hints of cherry even – which is not something you'd associate with a whisky, but which is not altogether unpleasant. It's strange in the sense that it doesn't taste like you're drinking whisky. The closest bourbon would be a sweet one, but it also has an almost rum-like aspect. Yet despite this, it still has that burn that I associate with good Scotch. And it has the slight peaty flavour, which is not to say smoky because it's not smoky at all really. It has a beautiful auburn colour and gives a cheeky zing that probably has to do with the alcohol percentage which tends to lie near the 60% mark. Apparently it is meant to be in the style of a 19th Century whisky, or at least, that's what the promotional guff says on the Aberlour site. But all that Sherry soaked oak does give one the impression that the sweet aspect has been deliberately played up oh so subtly, so as to sit better with people who don't drink much whisky and who want something strong but still palatable after dessert, and who would normally opt for port or a dessert wine. All in all, it's not one to turn your nose up at, but still worth trying if you get the chance. |
